Explanatory Essay
The Malayan Emergency
I wrote about this event because I had learned alot about different wars throughout middle school. The wars I learned included World War I, World War 2, The Civil War, and The Cold War. Due to learning about all these things before I did not want to research them again. I next looked up wars that Australia was involved in because I wanted to do this from the perspective of Australia. The Malayan Emergency came up and I decided that it looked interesting. Later I found out the the Malayan Emergency had more to do with Malaya than Australia. That is when I decided to look at this event through the Malayan perspective instead of the Australian Perspective.
Malaya is a country located in Southwest Asia, it is now called Malaysia. Malaya has thirteen states, the states are Penang, Selangor, Johor, Sabah, Sarawak, Malacca, Perak, Kedah, Pahang, Kelantan, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan and, Perlis. There are four countries that border Malaya these countries are Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. Malaya has a relation to the United Kingdom through a trade agreement made in 1824. When the Malayan Emergency began there was two main parties the British Commonwealth and the Guerrillas. Guerrillas are a member of a small independent group taking part in irregular fighting, typically against larger regular forces. In this case the larger regular forces were The British Commonwealth.
The Malayan Emergency began on June 16 of 1948 and ended on July 12 of 1960. The Malayan Emergency started when Malaya went into a State of Emergency during the cold war, which lasted from 1947 to 1991. A state of emergency is a situation of national danger or disaster in which a government suspends normal constitutional procedures in order to regain control. The Malayan National Liberation Army which was the armed part of the Malayan Communist Party, began attacking rubber plantations, mines, police stations, derailing trains and burning workers houses, it was decided that a state of emergency needed to be declared. This event was one of the only successful counterinsurgency operations(military or political action taken against the activities of guerrillas or revolutionaries) made by the Western powers during the cold war.
The Malayan Emergency began with The Malayan National Liberation Army, the armed part of the Malayan Communist Party. The Malayan Communist Party began attacking different places and things in Malaya these things included of rubber plantations, mines police stations, derailing trains and burning workers houses. When this happened it was decided by the government of Malaya that they needed to go into a state of emergency. By going into a state of emergency on June 16 of 1948 they began to regain power. The government did not fully regain power until July 12 of 1960. This was one of the only successful operations to regain power during the cold war.
This event is important because if Malaya did not declare a state of emergency they would have never regained power. If they had never regained power the country of Malaya would have just continued to get more dangerous. The Communist party probably would also continued to attack but would do it more frequently and attack more important places. Since Malaya did declare a state of emergency eventually the government had more power than the communist party so they could have the control of their country back. The British and Commonwealth took down the communist party so that there attacks did not continue or continue to get worse
I chose the perspective of the Malayan Commonwealth. The Malayan Commonwealth was one of the two groups that helped take down the Communist party. The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 53 sovereign states. The Commonwealth believe that the Communist Party caused Malaya to go into State of Emergency. They believe this because if it was not for the attacks on rubber plantations, mines police stations, derailing trains, and burning workers houses, the government of Malaya would not have had to go into a state of emergency to regain power.

This project was somewhat difficult because at first I was not sure what to write about and because I am typically not a strong writer. There was also easy parts of the project like the research after figuring out what I was going to research.
