"Your Life on Earth" Personal Philosophy Project
Reflection
Project Description: This project was about doing something that aligns with your personal philosophy and your outlook on life such as what makes you happy and what gives you life meaning. I decided to do this project by displaying kindness since it makes me happy to see people be kind and to me being kind even to people I do not know can make someone's day and mean a lot to them. My project was seeking to answer the project question of what's the purpose of existence. To me one of the main purpose of existence is to be kind to everyone around them no matter how much you like them or dislike them or how well you know them or weather they are a complete stranger. To display being kind to people or why you should be kind we have made Instagram account were we make posts of doing kind things. The inspiration behind my project was seeing things about kindness and pay it forward on social media. The perspective I developed is that being kind make a bad day better for the person who is struggling.
New Insights: The big thing I learned is that its hard to be kind to people especially if you don't like them or don't know them because as humans we say things about people without even thinking about it and don't take into consideration how the things we say about those people can hurt them. Another thing this project led me to really think about is how money and looks has to do with the way people view one another. Like a lot of the time people will socialize with people who either have a average amount of money or have a abundance of money. Where someone who has less money or is homeless will be looked down upon by those who have more money. The same goes for looks people tend to go to flock to the person who looks the best and not the person in older torn up clothes. Until this project I had never considered what kindness meant to some people. This really showed when interviewing the west minster village retirement home residents. The person my group interviewed talked about how a little bit of kindness can go a long ways in someone else life and even make your life more meaningful.
Further Questions and Intellectual Work Left to Do:
One thing I have began to wonder about is why there is so many cruel and unkind people in this world when in reality it is so simple to be kind. A question I still need to answer for myself is does being kind make life meaningful and happy or does it just create the sense or illusion or happiness and meaningfulness. Another question I want to answer for myself is what is my place in the world and what is my calling in life. I want learn more about the different philosophy's around the world because I feel like the two philosophy's we learned about are not fitting to me so I want to find one that is more me these are the things I want to learn after this project.

Rhetorical Discourse Project
Art Piece
Artist Statement
This art piece is a symbol of the bad in the justice system out weighing the good in the justice system. This art piece has multiple parts to it all of which have to do with the same topic. The woman is lady justice. In the real world, lady justice represents how the justice system does not see anything about a person other than their crime. In the painting lady justice has one eye uncovered and one covered. This symbolizes that the justice system is not actually blind to certain attributes and characteristics of a person. In the painting there is also the scale of justice. It is tilted to one side a lot more than it is the other side. One side represents the justices and the other side represents the injustices. There is also a sentence on the painting. The sentence says Is lady justice really blindfolded. This means that even though the justice system claims to not see certain things about a person they do even if they don't realize it.
The side of the scale that is farthest up is the justices in the justice system. On the justice side of the justice system there are 3 arrows pointing to the left, these symbols a person's past playing a role in their sentence. Like how if someone has committed murder in the past and is highly supected of it agian there past should be taken into account. There is also a book on the justices side. The book represents laws and how there are certain laws that deserve certain punishments. The law book also represents the punishment of the crime and according to laws how crimes should be punished. If the laws are broken like murder and rape. The last symbol on the justice side is a pair of handcuffs. The handcuffs represent that a crime has been committed and how the crime will affect the person.
Even though the justice system and scale are supposed to be equal I do not see it that way. I think that the injustices in the justice system outweigh the justices so much and that's why the injustice side is a lot lower than the justice side. On the injustices side there is a male and a female symbol. They represent the prison system not having similar numbers of male to female prisoners since there are 1873400 for male prisoners than there are female prisoners. There is the word race written in different colors representing. This is representing how race is a cause for different treatment within the justice and prison system. The darker color is at the top and the lightest is at the bottom; this represents there being more african Americans incarcerated each than white people. There is a dollar sign and a lighting bolt. The dollar sign represents the wealth of someone and the lighting bolt represents the amount of power that a person has.Often times people with a lot of money or power(politicians, corporate owners, famous people) can get out of most miner crimes that are punishable. On the injustice side there are two things that are also on the justice side. These two things are a person's past and what crime that was committed. People who commit minor crimes and have no criminal record go to prison just as long as someone committed a worse crime and has a past.
I don't think there is a good solution to this that everyone would be happy with. The goal of the justice system is to keep everyone safe. Most people can agree on that. The main changes I can see people agreeing on are; better rehabilitation of the incarcerated. This would make a second offense less likely. One simple way that is a proven rehabilitation method is prisoners helping train service dogs. This helps the inmates mental health and behavior. Rates of depression and violence dropped in the prisoners training dogs. Out of the inmates who train dogs for “leader dogs for the blind michigan” only 11% of them re offend. I also believe the justice system needs reformed. They need to take into better consideration the criminal history of a person and the severity of the crime committed. Everyone in the justice/prison system from the police to the judge to the prison need to be better trained to treat everyone the same. No matter power, gender, race or wealth. I also think some laws need reformed. What crimes make someone unable to get a job due to a minor offense. If these changes were to occur we would be one step closer to the justice system actually helping inmates instead of hurting them.

Reflection
The project I chose to do was show the injustices in the justice system while still acknowledging the justices in the justice system. The way I shared this with the audience is through an art piece. This art piece displays and acknowledges the two sides of the argument. It also uses a question to display some of the opinions in the art piece. Overall I believe my art piece did a very good job at displaying my topic in a thoughtful and creative manner.
As I have learned more about the political spectrum my perspective has not shifted it has stayed the same. I have only learned more about my side of the political spectrum. I have discovered what it means to be on the side of the spectrum I have been on. I have also learned more about the general Ideologies of my side of the political spectrum. The parts of the project that taught me the most about the sides of the political spectrum was at the beginning when we researched what the beliefs of both sides and when we talked to the libral and conservitive panel This was when it became very apparent what side of the political spectrum I am on and how I relate to others on this side of the spectrum. This part of the project also taught me more about the other side of the spectrum. The panels not only allowed me to learn more about my side of the spectrum. They also taught me were the beliefs of the other side comes from nd were or what are the cause of their beliefs
I have learned many things about rhetoric ideology and the democratic experience throughout this project. When ideology first came up in this project I had no idea what it meant and didnt why we needed to learn about it and now I do. The best and simplest way to explain ideology is where or what did a person's beliefs and opinions on a subject stem from. The reason for learning about ideology was so we can identify where our beliefs and values come from. When rhetoric came up at first once had no idea what it was or the purpose of learning about it. Rhetoric means to persuade an audience into believing something typically using logos, pathos and ethos. The reason we learned about rhetoric is because it was necessary for our final project to have an effect on its audience. In my opinion democatic experiment means this democracy we have built is only an experiment or simulation. There is no guarantee that democracy would work in the beginning; it was only a test.
In our society the role of rojarine rhetoric or willingness to be disturbed can help both sides of the political spectrum understand each other. Rogerian rhetoric means acknowledging the beliefs of the other side while also trying to convince an audience of something. Willingness to be disturbed is willingness to listen and understand something you don't agree with; without getting irritated. Willingness to be disturbed into today's society is not easy because many people are set in their ways. In the case that everyone had the willingness to be disturbed people would be able to agree on political things. Even if people didnt agree they would be able to understand the other side better
